Read currency and quoted quantity before the number
A larger number on an exchange table does not mean a more expensive trip. Every rate has a currency and a quoted quantity. Read USD, JPY, or EUR together with whether the quotation is per one or per 100 units.
This is not a live-rate table or advice about when to exchange. The figures below were created to demonstrate unit calculations.
Write all three calculations in the same form
Assume KRW 1,400 per dollar, KRW 950 per 100 yen, and KRW 1,500 per euro. With no separate charge, calculate the cost of USD 100, JPY 10,000, and EUR 100.
USD: 100 / 1 × 1,400 = KRW 140,000
JPY: 10,000 / 100 × 950 = KRW 95,000
EUR: 100 / 1 × 1,500 = KRW 150,000Notice the error that would result from multiplying 10,000 yen directly by 950. Divide the foreign amount by the quotation quantity before applying the rate.
A cash total does not specify the notes
Booking a total does not necessarily reserve a denomination mix. Ask the collection branch for smaller notes if you need them for small purchases. Do not assume a denomination is always stocked or accepted everywhere.
To identify notes, consult the U.S. Currency Education Program, Bank of Japan currency guide, and ECB banknote guide. Official designs and denominations do not establish a particular counter’s stock. Source links checked on 4 November 2026.
Build the amount from planned payments
Separate cash-only spending from card or prepaid purchases. Obtain prices from actual booking, transport, or merchant information. Listing the currency and payment method for each expense is more useful than assigning a fixed cash amount to a trip length.
- Arrival transport: the service and accepted payment methods.
- Small cash expenses: expected items and useful denominations.
- Backup: an accessible option if a card fails or is lost.
A short check before exchange
- Reread the currency code, amount, and quoted quantity.
- Calculate the won total using the applied rate and charges.
- Confirm note mix and collection place.
- Count the denominations received and compare them with the receipt.
The bank-and-changer comparison guide explains how to normalize quotes to the same foreign amount.
